Pay Per Click

In September 1997 the company Goto (now known as Overture), was founded by Bill Gross' Idea lab. In June 1998 they launched the first 'pay per placement' search engine to allow advertisers to take delivery of placement of search results by bidding on specific keywords that are highly pertinent to their sites. In one fell pounce the company created the market for pay per click search by redefining how businesses market themselves online.

The search engine enables advertisers to bid for placement of their sites in its search results with terms that are pertinent to their businesses. These search results are screened for significance by an in house editorial team, and are then dispersed to thousands of Web sites across the Internet, including Lycos, MSN, and Yahoo! Advertisers pay the amount of their bid only when a customer clicks on their listing, providing them with one of the most cost effectual ways to drive targeted customer leads to their sites.

In July 1999 Netscape signed a contract to become a PPC results provider, and began displaying Goto results above its search schedule. From that time on, many the chief search directories have also begun displaying PPC schedule in addition to their own search results.

In November 2000, Goto's PPC engine model was launched In the UK prompt the structure of Espotting the primary major European PPC model to make any headway to being a challenger to Goto.
